prize for Middle East peace reporting
Journalists have until April 1 to submit articles for a contest designed
to encourage journalism that promotes understanding and political dialogue in
the Middle East. Search
for Common Ground is organizing the 2004 Eliav-Sartawi Awards for Middle East
Journalism. The organization is accepting articles that open windows of
understanding on the peoples of the region and on the issues which divide them. Winning
articles will provide insight into regional issues and debates, expose readers
to new perspectives, and help lay the groundwork for peaceful solutions to the
regions problems. Winners receive EU€1,000 (about US$1,230). Zel
Lurie, an American journalist who began reporting on the Middle East during the
British Mandate in Palestine, founded the awards. He created them to recognize
journalists whose work promotes peace between Arabs and Israelis. The program
is named after Issam Sartawi and Lova Eliav, two advocates for peace between Israelis
and Palestinians. Submissions
must have been published between March 15, 2003, and April 1, 2004, in Arab, Israeli
or Western publications. Submissions in languages other than English should include
a translation. Applications
are available at http://www.sfcg.org/documents/meapplication.doc
