Association Offering Prizes for Minority Coverage
(IJNet)
The European Association of
Daily Newspapers in Minority and Regional Languages (Midas) is offering two different
prizes for journalists covering minorities and cultural diversity in Europe. The
Midas and the Otto von Habsburg prizes honor journalists who have dedicated themselves
to the protection of minorities within the context of the ongoing European integration
process. The
Midas Prize is open only to journalists employed by Midas-member newspapers. Interested
participants should submit articles written in a minority or regional language.
The winner will receive EU€1,000 (around US$1,220). The
Otto von Habsburg Prize, also judged by the Midas Governing Board, is open any
journalist working for a daily European newspaper. Submissions should be in languages
originally spoken in Europe with an English-language summary. The winner will
receive EU€2,000 (around US$2,440). The
deadline for both competitions is January 31, 2005. Prizes will handed out at
the Midas General Assembly in spring 2005. Midas
is an association of newspaper editors representing more than 10 indigenous linguistic
communities in Europe. Its goal is to promote greater coordination among different
publications in these native languages. For
