Training on Diversity and Hate Speech in Lithuania PDF Print

lithuania training 1Twenty four journalism students and young journalists participated in the training on diversity and hate speech organized by National Institute for Social Integration from Lithuania. Some of the participants were chosen by the Media Diversity Institute (MDI) who is the partner in this project.

One of the goals of the workshop held in Lithuania was to define terms ‘hate speech’ and ‘freedom of expression’ and to make a distinction between them.

The main objectives were to recognise hate speech and stereotypes, especially the stereotyping of the vulnerable groups, and to learn how to react against them. The way to do that, as Neringa Jurciukonyte from the National Institute for Social Integration explained, is through the direct contact with the people from the vulnerable groups. “Put yourselves in their shoes and talk to people directly”, said Jurciukonyte.

The media, academics, migrants and the public will engage in an inclusive debate on migration, examining public attitude and media representation of migrants, and raising alternatives voices and messages.

The two-day conference, which is called “The immigration debate: the facts, the rhetoric and the voices; initiating an inclusive debate and raising alternative voices and messages”, will be held on the 9th and 10th May in London.

 
Course on How to Report on Women’s Issues PDF Print

thomson reuters logoWorldwide journalists are invited to attend an intensive course on how to report on women’s issues organised by Trust Media, the Thomson Reuters Foundation training service.

The course, which will be held in London from the 27th to the 31st of May 2013, is “a lively and practical seminar designed to help journalists refine their skills, with particular emphasis on the coverage of women’s issues, their opinions and rights,” the Trust Media website reports.

 
Mediterranean Forum on Intercultural Dialogue PDF Print

annaforumYouth leaders, civil society organisations, policy-makers and intercultural experts will gather together at the Anna Lindh Foundation Forum in Marseille. They will discuss on intercultural dialogue, which is seen as the key for the Euro-Mediterranean region to deal with challenges following Arab Awakening and the social impact of the economic crisis in Europe.

Under the slogan of “Citizens for the Mediterranean”, participants from all around the world will meet from 4th to 7th April to talk about diversity, media and women among other issues.

‘Ethical Reporting across Cultures’ is one of the organised agoras that will address the role of the media as a tool to contribute to intercultural dialogue. The media help to create the public space for the freedom of expression, debate and plurality of perspectives essential for citizens in a democratic society. It is an essential ingredient to renew Euro-Mediterranean dialogue and make this dialogue more capable of addressing events comprehensively by helping peoples, states and institutions relate to one another on a basis of mutual understanding.

 
Festival of Migrant Film is Calling for Entries PDF Print

migrant festivalTo celebrate the World Refugee Day (20th June), Slovene Philanthropy and Zavod Voluntariat are organising the fourth edition of the Festival of Migrant Film.

The festival, which is now accepting entries from filmmakers worldwide, will take place in Ljubljana, Slovenia, from the 10th to the 21st of June 2013.

Feature films and documentaries will focus on topics related to migrations, asylum, refugees, integration of immigrants and coexistence in multicultural societies. Videos will also offer a critical analysis of migration-related topics and highlight the cultural heritage of migrants.
