In Cairo, in April 2012, the Media Diversity Institute (MDI) will train 12 Egyptian radio reporters to produce ‘audio diaries’ showcasing Egypt’s diversity and to be aired on Egyptian radio. The trainees will attend a 10 day training course and then over a period of 9 months will produce radio pieces based on ‘audio diaries’ recorded by ordinary Egyptians from diverse communities.

The pieces will then be broadcast on Egyptian radio and journalists will be paid for each piece aired. The objective of the initiative is to help expand peoples’ understanding of their own communities and the different diversity issues in Egypt.

The initiative is part of the project ‘REBUILDING POST-REVOLUTION EGYPTIAN MEDIA: EMBRACING FREE EXPRESSION, DIVERSITY AND INCLUSIVENESS’ which aims to encourage a responsible Egyptian media, based on international standards and principles of free expression, diversity, inclusiveness, transparency and public accountability, and is funded by SIDA.
