Health Journalism Contest for Best Coverage of Vaccines PDF Print

vaccine by Gates FoundationThree competitions for the best coverage of vaccines and immunisations have been launched by the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ) in partnership with the African Health Journalists Association and the Arab Media Forum.

Journalists are invited to submit stories related to diseases that are preventable or treatable with vaccines, such as polio, measles and pneumonia. Eligible stories must have appeared in a print, broadcast or online media in Sub-Saharan Africa, Pakistan and the Gulf states between 15 March and 15 May 2013, which includes World Immunization Week (24-30 April). Submitted work may include feature articles, in-depth, investigative or explanatory stories, multimedia reports, documentaries or discussion programs.

Apps and Games Promoting Intercultural Dialogue PDF Print

unaoc apps battuta 2The United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC), in partnership with Learning Games Network and MIT-Education Arcade, has announced the results and current updates of CREATE UNAOC - the apps/games for intercultural dialogue challenge.

Last year the UNAOC invited the programmers around the world to share their vision of how mobile apps and games can raise awareness and enable new opportunities for intercultural dialogue.

The winning applications were presented at the 5th UNAOC Forum in Vienna where one of the participants of the Global Forum was the Media Diversity Institute (MDI) Executive Director.

Among the five winners and five honourable mentions are apps/games allowing users to improve their knowledge of Arab culture (Ibn Battuta), to experience the world’s cultural diversity through the eyes of children (Touchable Earth) and to become aware of the global crisis for one of the most basic need: Water (Get Water!).

These apps/games are available and can be downloaded.

A Sea of Words Competition PDF Print

The Aseawords3nna Lindh Foundation and the European Institute of the Mediterranean have launched the sixth edition of the international competition of short stories and tales "A Sea of Words".

The contest is aimed at young people between 18 and 30 years old from the 43 countries of the Euro-Mediterranean area. The participants will need to write stories or short stories focusing on solidarity and citizenship issues that show different sensibilities and realities lived at the Euro-Mediterranean region.

The works must address issues related to intercultural dialogue, mainly of a political, socio-cultural, economic and environmental nature. They must be original and wholly unpublished works and not exceed the maximum length of 2,500 words.

The deadline for submissions is 25th May 2003 at midnight.

Awards for Projects on Intercultural Dialogue PDF Print

bakuforumThe “Living Together Peacefully in a Diverse World” is a prize that seeks to reward those projects that have contributed to protect and enhance cultural diversity. It is an award organised within the 2nd World Forum on Intercultural Dialogue by the Government of Azerbaijan and the United Nations Alliance of Civilizations (UNAOC).

The Forum will take place from May 29th to June 1st, 2013, in Baku, Azerbaijan. Its main objective is to highlight the need for practical initiatives that promote cultural diversity and coexistence among communities.

Not-for-profit organizations, research and educational institutions among others, have the opportunity to present their projects to win one of the four monetary prizes from $5,000 to $10,000.

Contest for Young Roma - My Story, My Rights PDF Print

roma react and amnestyAmnesty International and ERGO Network have launched the contest with the aim of highlighting the voices of young Roma in Europe. The two organisations are calling young Roma to contribute to the RomaReact interactive map for the contest “My story, my rights”.

“Share your story with the world, make everyone see, through your own eyes, who the Roma are, and help us fight anti-Roma prejudice and discrimination”, say Amnesty International and ERGO.

The story sent for the completion could be anything that “concerns the contribution of Roma to their wider community; that shows that Roma should be considered equal members of society, who hold rights that must be respected”.

The story should represent the positive approach of Roma individuals and groups who want a better relationship between Roma and non-Roma and who demand equality and rights for themselves, their families and communities. It can be also about the participants.

The contest will close on 30 April 2013. The award ceremony will be held in June 2013 in Brussels.
