Journalism and Community Engagement Under Trump PDF Print

A U.S. Exchange Programme through Washington DC, Baltimore, El Paso and Minneapolis

Date: 17 March 2017

Country: USA

By Giulia Dessi, MDI project manager

31899431943_d9902fb65e_kTwo days after president Trump’s first travel ban, the Washington Dulles International airport was in a frenzy. Instead of bored-looking taxi drivers waiting with a name printed on a sheet of paper, a loud crowd of protestors cheered and welcomed arriving travellers with chants and posters. Dozens of solicitors were offering free legal advice: “Do you need an attorney?” “Was anyone on your flight detained?” The presidential executive order, soon dubbed “Muslim ban”, halted all refugee admissions and temporarily barred people from seven Muslim-majority countries. This prompted both legal challenges and protests. All major U.S. airports that day had similar spontaneous initiatives.

I arrived at that airport on that day and I was overwhelmed by it. I was taking part in a U.S. Exchange Programme on Balancing Freedom and Security. It couldn’t be more timely. The agenda included meetings with professors, NGOs, authorities, and journalists in Washington DC, Baltimore, El Paso, and Minneapolis. I was eager to understand where all this was coming from, how it was received by those enforcing the law and by those opposing it.

The current discourse surrounding migration has taken a dramatically negative turn in the last decade both within Europe and internationally, demanding a review on how information pertaining to migration is gathered, shared and disseminated amongst different actors, which greatly affects both migration policy and public perception.

South Social Meets Jewish Culture PDF Print

Date: 18 March 2017

Country: UK, London

South_Social_JewishAfter its success in hosting a night of celebrating the culture of Lebanon, the South Social Film Festival is organising an event dedicated to the Jewish culture. On Saturday 18 March, in the Cinema Museum in London, the South Social will screen a movie “Through the Wall” by Rama Burshtein. The film is using a universal topic such as wedding, dating and all the rules that go with it and transfers elements of a typical Bridget Jones romp to an ultra-Orthodox Jewish setting.

The South Social will be also celebrating the International Women's day. The organisers promise a night of great kosher cuisine and raving music by the band TANTZ, which is a klezmer trio with Balkan beats and gypsy jazz influences.
