As media across Europe begin to debate the consequences of the Toulouse terror attacks press freedom groups in France have reacted strongly to a plan by French President Nicolas Sarkozy to use the criminal law to crack down on people who visit Internet sites that promote race-hate and violence or are sympathetic to terrorism.

The latest stunt by Dutch right-wing populist Gert Wilders has sparked a new row over hate-speech in Europe and exposed a weakness bordering upon cowardice in government of the Netherlands. The anti-migrant Freedom Party (PVV) led by Wilders has launched a web-site inviting people to “shop a migrant” by lodging complaints over people from East Europe in the country.

Just two months after the Media Diversity Insitute and other press freedom groups called for more solidarity within Hungarian journalism to counter state threats to the press a new group of independent editors is launched in Budapest today. The Hungarian Editors’ Forum, an association for ethical journalism and self-regulation, is a group which says it has a bold prescription for the country’s media crisis – more independent reporting and higher standards.

Media coverage of the Stephen Lawrence murder from the beginning rightly emphasised the need for a radical overhaul of the police and elimination of the institutional racism exposed by the 1999 Macpherson report into police handling of the case.
