MONITORING - 'Ethnic images in South East Europe' |
| October
19 / London, UK |
|
An
Advisory Committee on Media Monitoring met to develop
a research protocol. This protocol was the second step in MDI's Media Monitoring
project to analyse coverage of ethnic minorities in the print media across South
East Europe. The protocol was then used by a 10-member multi-national team to
monitor the media in their countries. The team analysed the two leading newspapers
in each of their countries for a period of one month in November 2001. The project
leader then processed the data from the monitoring, produced case studies and
a comparative analysis that formed the report "Mirroring Images: Ethnic
Minorities in the South East European Press". The results of the monitoring
now form part of MDI's Media Monitoring Manual, by Dr.
Snjezana Milivojevic. It offers a surveying
ABC for both first time monitors and those with more experience. It is a comprehensive
resource for anyone wanting to find out how the media in their region is depicting
minorities. Results

25 to August 8 / Pristina, Kosovo |
|
MDI
in cooperation with the Center for War, Peace and the News Media (New York), Radio
Kontakt (Pristina) and Association
of Journalists of Kosovo held a workshop at the
US Office compound in Prishtina. The workshop was for 31 journalists from 18 different
media outlets. It was designed to help local journalists understand how to face
conflict. The two week conference taught journalists about violence and conflict
from a psychological perspective, but it reinforced and built upon the critical
skills needed in reporting in such environments. Journalists learned practical
skills such as finding appropriate stories, developing diverse sources, and effectively
interviewing people in difficult situations. In addition, participants learned
about interviewing victims of trauma and how not to re-traumatize people. |
