MEDIA MONITORING - 'Ethnic images in South East Europe'
October 19 / London, UK

An Advisory Committee on Media Monitoring met to develop a research protocol. This protocol was the second step in MDI's Media Monitoring project to analyse coverage of ethnic minorities in the print media across South East Europe. The protocol was then used by a 10-member multi-national team to monitor the media in their countries. The team analysed the two leading newspapers in each of their countries for a period of one month in November 2001. The project leader then processed the data from the monitoring, produced case studies and a comparative analysis that formed the report "Mirroring Images: Ethnic Minorities in the South East European Press". The results of the monitoring now form part of MDI's Media Monitoring Manual, by Dr. Snjezana Milivojevic. It offers a surveying ABC for both first time monitors and those with more experience. It is a comprehensive resource for anyone wanting to find out how the media in their region is depicting minorities.
