relations training for Armenian NGOs |

| MDI,
in cooperation with the Yerevan Press Club and Asparez Press Club (Gyumri), held
a media relations workshop for NGO leaders and journalists. NGO participants were
given practical training in techniques ranging from gauging news value and creating
photo opportunities, to preparing press releases and press conferences. Journalists
were trained in the value of NGOs to the news agenda, and how to get the most
from them. Trainers were a mixture of experienced international journalists and
PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners. There were 15
NGO participants and 10 journalists at the workshop. | |

for NGO leaders and journalists. NGO participants were given practical training

The
Curriculum Resource Centre at the Central European University, Budapest, Hungary
invited MDI to hold a one-day workshop for journalism professors from Central
and Eastern Europe as well as the former Soviet Union. The workshop "Covering
Diversity: Between Multiculturalism and Universalism" took place 3-8 November.
The CRC is the Central European University's outreach program for social science
teaching in Central and Eastern Europe and the former Soviet Union. With an emphasis
on curriculum development, teaching and dissemination of academic resources to
higher educational institutions in the region, the CRC facilitates academic exchange,
course development and curriculum reform activities. Further

in cooperation with OSI EUMAP program, held a workshop for Lithuanian journalists
and Roma representatives. The one-day event on "Covering Diversity and Minority
Issues" had a special focus on the Roma in Lithuania. The workshop also included
a visit to the 'Tabor' Roma settlement on the outskirts of Vilnius. For most journalists
involved, the event was their first face-to-face encounter with the realities
Roma life. | | |

MDI
held a three-day workshop for journalists from South-East Europe who covered the
conflicts in the region. It was designed to raise awareness of the psychosocial
effects of trauma on reporters from the Balkans. Participants attended from Bosnia
and Herzegovina, Croatia, Macedonia, Slovenia and Serbia.
This
workshop built on the work of MDI's post-conflict conference in Montenegro in
workshop in Opatija
in January 2002. It brought to bear new trauma training for journalists developed
by Dart Centre Europe together with the BBC and Reuters news agency.

held a workshop "Achieving Democracy Through the Media" at the invitation
of the Curriculum Resource Centre (CRC), Central European University, Budapest,
Hungary. The CRC invited MDI to present it's Reporting Diversity Curriculum Framework
to professors from Central and Eastern Europe. The

MDI conference "Reporting diversity civic responsibility or just good
business" was the second annual media decision-makers conference. It was
held in cooperation with the Albanian Media Institute (AMI). The participants
included top level media decision-makers from print and broadcast media outlets
from throughout South East Europe. | |
