NGO - 'Media relations training: Roma community leaders & NGOs in Albania'
December 16-18 / Tirana, Albania
MDI, in cooperation the Albanian Media Institute, held a media relations workshop for Roma community leaders and NGOs. They were given practical training in techniques ranging from gauging news value and creating photo opportunities, to preparing press releases and press conferences. Trainers were a mixture of experienced international journalists and PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners. There were 18 participants.

NGO - 'Media relations training for Azerbaijani NGOs'
December 8-10 / Quba, Azerbaijan
MDI held a media relations workshop for NGO leaders and journalists. NGO participants were given practical training in techniques ranging from gauging news value and creating photo opportunities, to preparing press releases and press conferences. Trainers were a mixture of experienced international journalists and PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners. There were 14 NGO participants and 5 journalists at the workshop.

MEDIA MANAGEMENT/JOURNALISM - 'Broadcast media consultant'
November - December / Georgia

MDI deployed a broadcast media consultant, to work intensively with Channel One in Georgia , during the months of November and December, to create minority language news programmes in five languages.

JOURNALISM - 'Team reporting project by Armenian journalists'
November 30 - December 11 / Armenia
An eight-person team of Armenian broadcast reporters spanned the country for two-weeks, working on an in-depth investigation of refugees. One international and one local editor coordinated the team.

MDI, in cooperation the Media Center Nis, held a media relations workshop for Roma community leaders and NGOs. Trainers were a mixed team of experienced international journalists and PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners. There were 15 participants.

JOURNALISM - 'Team reporting project by Azerbaijani journalists'
November 1-12 / Azerbaijan
An eight-person team of Azerbaijani reporters spanned the country for two-weeks, working on an in-depth investigation of conditions faced by Azerbaijanis with disabilities. One international and one local editor coordinated the team. The investigation was published as a special supplement in a series of Azerbaijani newspapers.

NGO - 'Publication of 'Media Relations Guide for the Roma', Albanian edition'
October / Albania
As part of its Roma programme, MDI works with Roma NGOs, training them in media communications skills. An Albanian-language edition of MDI's 'Media Relations Guide for the Roma', was published by MDI in October. The handbook is a practical guide to media relations for Roma NGOs and Roma people who need to communicate better with the media. (The handbook is already available in Romani, Croatian, English and Macedonian languages)

AWARD - 'British Diversity Award for MDI's Israeli journalism student project'
October 22 / London, Great Britain
The Arab-Jewish student journalist team behind the 'Fresh Views' coexistence newspaper, produced as part of the Media Diversity Institute's 'Finding common ground in Israel - Jewish and Arab journalism students working together' project, was recognized at the British Diversity Awards, 2004 annual awards ceremony. The team, from the Emek Yezreel College near Nazareth, received a 'Certificate of Excellence' commending its work in promoting inclusion in its northern Israel community.

ACADEMIC - 'Meeting of journalism professors from the South Caucasus'
October 19-20 / Tbilisi, Georgia
A group of six journalism professors from the South Caucasus met to begin the development of a diversity reporting curriculum framework for use in universities across the region. Also attending the meeting were two journalism professors from South East Europe who, working with MDI, have already developed and taught similar curricula in their region.

Journalists were trained in the value of NGOs to the news agenda, and how to get the most from them. Trainers were a mixed team of experienced international journalists and PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners. There were 15 NGO participants and 10 journalists at the workshop.

EXHIBITION - 'Eastern Europe's unknown Holocaust: The case of Romania's Roma'
September 13-14 / Brussels, Belgium
MDI, in partnership with the Romanian Roma Center Aven Amentza, ran an exhibition on the Roma Holocaust at the 'Media and Fighting Discrimination against Roma and Sinti: Media as a tool against anti-Gypsyism' session of the OSCE's second 'Conference on Tolerance and the Fight against Racism, Xenophobia and Discrimination'.

MEDIA MONITORING - 'Monitoring of diversity coverage in the South Caucasus'
September 1-30 / Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia
Media monitoring of 15 leading newspapers in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia took place for the entire month of September. Monitoring specifically examined the media's coverage of the following diversity groups: refugees/internally displaced persons, disabled persons, religious minorities, sexual minorities and ethnic minorities. It was followed by a cross-regional comparison of the results.

FACT-FINDING - 'Mission to Indonesia'
August 7-17 / Java and Sumatra, Indonesia
MDI conducted the second of two fact-finding missions to Indonesia to meet with journalists, media decision-makers and NGO representatives. During the course of this mission MDI will conducted dozens of interviews (both in Jakarta, and in provincial cities in Java and Sumatra) with various media and minorities groups. The aim was to assess the media diversity needs of the region and to gather local views on strategies for any possible MDI intervention.

An eight-person team of Georgian reporters spanned the country for two-weeks, working on an in-depth investigation of refugees and internally displaced persons in Georgia. One international and one local editor coordinated the team. The resulting special report was published in eight Georgian newspapers.

MEDIA/NGO - 'Reporting Diversity Network, annual meeting'
July 14 / London, UK
MDI's Reporting Diversity Network (South Caucasus chapter) annual meeting took place at MDI's offices in London. MDI partner organizations in the South Caucasus gathered to evaluate the implementation of MDI's projects in that region, to discuss planned activities and to propose further solutions to bridge the gaps between the region's minorities and media.

Workshop sessions, using a mixture of theory and practical exercises, focused on the way the media covers diversity issues, and how it could improve that coverage. MDI is currently recruiting participants for this event.

JOURNALISM - 'Reporting diversity for Jewish and Arab Israeli journalism students'
May 14-15 / Nazareth, Israel
Weekend three of the 'Finding common ground in Israel - Jewish and Arab journalism students working together' project, in which 24 Jewish and Arab undergraduate journalism students from the Emek Yezreel College came together to tackle the issues surrounding reporting on ethnic otherness. During this third and final weekend, the project culminated with the students producing a 24-page, bi-lingual newspaper supplement, 100,000 copies of which were then circulated into their northern Israeli community as an insert in local Arabic-language and Hebrew-language newspapers.

FACT-FINDING - 'Mission to Indonesia'
April 17-27 / Java, Kalimantan and Sulawesi, Indonesia
MDI conducted a fact-finding mission to Indonesia to meet with journalists, media decision-makers and NGO representatives. During the course of this mission MDI conducted dozens of interviews (both in Jakarta and in provincial cities in the Kalimantan and Sulawesi regions) with various media and minorities groups. The aim was to assess the media diversity needs of the region and to gather local views on strategies for any possible MDI intervention.
