| Media Diversity Institute, in association with Frontline is organizing a debate on the image of Muslims in the UK media. Are Muslims fairly presented in the UK media? Or are they misportrayed and stereotyped? Last August, the Muslim Council of Britain accused the BBC's Panorama of being ‘dishonestly presented and Islamophobic' when reporting on the leadership of British Muslims. According to a recent survey by the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, nearly 90% of UK Muslim students it surveyed believe the media image of their community needs to change. TV station's news programmes
in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia took place for the entire month of February. Monitoring specifically examined the media's coverage of the following diversity groups: refugees/internally displaced persons, disabled persons, religious minorities, sexual minorities and ethnic minorities. It was followed by a cross-regional comparison of the results.

A Caucasus-specific edition of MDI's 'Reporting Diversity Manual' was published, in Armenian, Azeri and Georgian languages. The manual includes sections on ethnicity, religion, gender, people with disabilities, socially disadvantaged groups, elderly people, refugees, sexual orientation, political dissidents and photographs/images. Each section contains reporting tips and detailed analysis of actual articles (taken from newspapers from the Caucasus, Western Europe and the US). Training modules are also included. |

As part of its Caucasus programme, MDI works with NGOs that represent minorities, training them in media communications skills. (Many editors complain to MDI that the majority of NGO's communicate poorly with them). A Caucasus-specific edition of the handbook by the Independent Journalism Foundation, 'A Media Relations handbook for Non-Governmental Organizations', was published by MDI, in Armenian, Azeri and Georgian languages. The handbook is a practical guide to media relations for non-governmental organisations and people who need to communicate better with the media. |
