JOURNALISM - 'Team reporting project by radio journalists from Bosnia & Herzegovina '

December 5-12 / Sarajevo, Bosnia & Herzegovina

An eight-person team of local radio journalists, Roma and non- Roma, will travel across Bosnia & Herzegovina for two-weeks, working on an in-depth investigation of issues faced by Roma people living there. One international editor will coordinate the team.

MDI will hold a media relations workshop for approximate 17 Roma community leaders and NGO representatives. The participants will receive practical training in techniques ranging from gauging news value and creating photo opportunities, to preparing press releases and press conferences. Trainers will be a mixed team of experienced international journalists and PR experts working alongside local editors and PR practitioners.

DEBATE - ' The Muslim Image in the Media: Between Fairness and Bias'

November 15 / London , Great Britain

Media Diversity Institute, in association with Frontline is organizing a debate on the image of Muslims in the UK media. Are Muslims fairly presented in the UK media? Or are they misportrayed and stereotyped? Last August, the Muslim Council of Britain accused the BBC's Panorama of being ‘dishonestly presented and Islamophobic' when reporting on the leadership of British Muslims. According to a recent survey by the Federation of Student Islamic Societies, nearly 90% of UK Muslim students it surveyed believe the media image of their community needs to change. September 23 - October 3 / Skopje, Macedonia

An eight-person team of local TV journalists, Roma and non-Roma, will travel across Macedonia for 10 days, working on an in-depth investigation of issues faced by Roma people living there, within the context of the four pillars - education, employment, housing and health - of the Decade of Roma Inclusion. The resulting 25 minute documentary film will be distributed free to all Macedonian TV stations. One international and one local editor will coordinate the team.

JOURNALISM - 'Diversity reporting and Roma issues training for news agency journalists'

September 16-18 / Belgrade, Serbia & Montenegro

MDI will hold a three-day workshop, for news agency journalists, covering diversity reporting - the full and objective coverage of both the majority and minorities - as well as Roma issues, public policies regarding Roma, and the Decade of Roma Inclusion. Workshop sessions, presented by international and local trainers, will focus on the way the agency covers diversity issues, and how it could improve that coverage. In the four months following the workshop, the agency will prepare a series of 40 articles from Albania, Bosnia & Herzegovina, Macedonia and Serbia & Montenegro covering Roma issues, for distribution to its subscribers.

ACADEMIC - 'Meeting of journalism professors from the South Caucasus'

September 3-4 / Istanbul, Turkey

A group of 14 journalism professors from the South Caucasus will follow up their 2004 meeting, during which they began the development of a diversity reporting curriculum framework for use in universities across their region. In 2005 they will meet professors from Austria, Hungary and Russia, to find out how diversity reporting is being taught in those countries.

MEDIA MANAGEMENT - 'Media decision-makers diversity conference'

Top level media managers from South Caucasus print and broadcast media outlets will gather for MDI's fourth media decision-makers' conference. The meeting will explore the use of diversity as both a business tool and community imperative.

MEDIA/NGO - 'Reporting Diversity Network, annual meeting'

July 29 / Vienna, Austria

MDI's Reporting Diversity Network (South Caucasus chapter) annual meeting took place in Vienna. MDI partner organizations in the South Caucasus gathered to evaluate the implementation of MDI's projects in that region, to discuss planned activities and to propose further solutions to bridge the gaps between the region's minorities and media.

MEDIA MANAGEMENT/JOURNALISM - 'Broadcast media consultants'
April - May / Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia
MDI deployed a team of four broadcast media consultants, two focusing on editorial issues and two focusing on management issues, to work intensively with selected Roma radio and TV outlets in Albania, Kosovo, Macedonia, Montenegro and Serbia during the months of April and May.

MEDIA MONITORING - 'South Caucasus diversity media monitoring evaluation meeting'
April 14-15 / Tbilisi, Georgia
A Cardiff University (Wales) media research expert will analyse the first round of MDI's South Caucasus media monitoring (a month's monitoring of 15 leading newspapers in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia in February), and discuss methodological issues with the monitoring team in preparation for the second round of monitoring, which is to focus on broadcast media.

JOURNALISM - 'Team reporting project by journalists from Serbia'

February 10-20 / Serbia & Montenegro

An eight-person team of local radio journalists, four of them Roma and four non-Roma, working in pairs, traveled across Serbia for two-weeks, collecting material from both Roma and non-Roma sources on discrimination, racism and other issues faced by Roma. Each pair produced a radio package for broadcast by their and other stations. One international and one local editor coordinated the team.

An eight-person team of Armenian and Georgian newspaper reporters worked intensively for two-weeks, on an in-depth investigation of the situation of peoples living in the Javakheti region of Georgia, which border Armenia. One international and two local editors coordinated the team.

MEDIA MONITORING - 'Monitoring of diversity coverage in the South Caucasus'

February 1-28 / Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia

Media monitoring of 15 leading TV station's news programmes in Armenia, Azerbaijan and Georgia took place for the entire month of February. Monitoring specifically examined the media's coverage of the following diversity groups: refugees/internally displaced persons, disabled persons, religious minorities, sexual minorities and ethnic minorities. It was followed by a cross-regional comparison of the results.

JOURNALISM - 'Publication of 'Reporting Diversity Manual', Caucasus edition'
February / Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia
A Caucasus-specific edition of MDI's 'Reporting Diversity Manual' was published, in Armenian, Azeri and Georgian languages. The manual includes sections on ethnicity, religion, gender, people with disabilities, socially disadvantaged groups, elderly people, refugees, sexual orientation, political dissidents and photographs/images. Each section contains reporting tips and detailed analysis of actual articles (taken from newspapers from the Caucasus, Western Europe and the US). Training modules are also included.

NGO - 'Publication of 'Media Relations Handbook for NGOs', Caucasus edition'
February / Armenia, Azerbaijan, Georgia
As part of its Caucasus programme, MDI works with NGOs that represent minorities, training them in media communications skills. (Many editors complain to MDI that the majority of NGO's communicate poorly with them). A Caucasus-specific edition of the handbook by the Independent Journalism Foundation, 'A Media Relations handbook for Non-Governmental Organizations', was published by MDI, in Armenian, Azeri and Georgian languages. The handbook is a practical guide to media relations for non-governmental organisations and people who need to communicate better with the media.
