The European Union's "For Diversity, Against Discrimination" award honours journalistic excellence in the field of workplace diversity and discrimination. Journalists from the 25 EU member states can submit entries on issues of discrimination on the grounds of racial or ethnic origin, religion or belief, age, disability and sexual orientation and promoting diversity in employment. Awards will be given in two categories: print and online journalism, and photo journalism. The deadline for entries is 31 December 2005. (EU)

Arab students of journalism or media schools have until 30 November to enter a journalism competition that focuses on fighting poverty. Organised by the Tunisia-based Center of Arab Women for Training and Research (CAWTAR), the competition focuses on the use of small-scale loans to fight poverty, but could also include topics such as poverty reduction as a development goal, the impact of poverty on married life, and civil society's role in helping women.

OneWorldTV and MTV's 'Staying Alive Campaign' have teamed up again to launch 2005's HIV/AIDS PSA competition. The competition is open to 15-25 year olds who should create a powerful 30-60 second Public Service Announcement (PSA), in any language, on the subject of HIV/AIDS, that informs and sensitises young people to the vulnerabilities of women and girls to HIV/AIDS and to prevent new infections. The winning PSA will be showcased on the Staying Alive website and the OneWorldTV open documentary platform - and has a very good chance of being broadcast on one or more of MTV's channels.

| Journalists from countries across Asia have until October 10 to propose in-depth, local stories for a special series related to World AIDS Day, December 1. The Asia Media Forum (AMF) is organizing the competition. Journalists whose proposals are selected will receive a grant for up to three nights of travel in their home country, plus an honorarium upon completion of the project. They must produce a story or series of stories of at least 2,000 words, which must be published in their own publication, and which will also appear on the AMF website and be distributed through the Asia-Pacific section of Inter Press Service (IPS) news.
