The
News Xchange, ("by broadcasters for broadcasters") was created to provide
broadcast news organisations around the world with a not-for-profit conference
that is both affordable and of relevance to broadcasters around the world.
It attracted 280 delegates
from 35 countries to Ljubljana, Slovenia, 10-11 October 2002. The thematic event
focused on the war on terrorism as well as finding and maintaining audiences.
MDI chaired a session at the first News Xchange conference. MDI's session was
on
"Broadcasters and the Populist Far Right: Do broadcasters act responsibly
in its coverage or reinforce stereotypes?" It raised such questions as:
How does broadcast journalism cover alienated citizens who are now supporting
extremist political parties throughout Europe? Is there a danger that extremist
leaders pandering to alienated viewers get uncritical coverage? What responsibilities
do broadcasters have to protect shared values and at the same time remain fair
and balanced and open to the voices of minorities and outsiders? Case studies
from the Netherlands, Sweden, Denmark, France, the UK and a pre-taped interview
with Sheikh Abu Hamzah al-Masri (Finsbury Park Mosque, UK) were presented followed
by an open discussion between the audience and an invited panel which included
