Europe and CIS

'A reporting diversity project for Russia's central and Volga regions'

Russia

This two-year project plans to work with human rights and minority groups, journalists, media decision-makers, and journalism professors. It will use diversity reporting to tackle nationalism, xenophobia and intolerance, in two regions of Russia, the central Russian region and the Volga region, chosen because they are experiencing notable problems regarding human rights and minorities' issues. For details, contact MDI programmes director, Lloyd Donaldson at: lloyd.donaldson@media-diversity.org

'Celebrating 'otherness' in the Ukraine'
Ukraine

A project that will capitalise on the new atmosphere in Ukraine, opening up the media to greater diversity, and holding politicians to account to all groups in society - particularly the marginalized and excluded. A key project component will be the production of audio-diaries for broadcast on radio: personal testimonies recorded by ordinary Ukrainians from minority groups ranging from the country's ethnic minorities, to people with disabilities, former prisoners, and many others.

Middle East and North Africa

'Roadmap routes: Arab and Jewish journalists engaging their communities in the search for solutions'
Israel
This project is concerned with the human rights of Israel's various communities - with a focus on the Israel's Arab community and relations between it and the majority Jewish community. It takes as its starting-point the idea of the participation in Israeli society, as full and equal members, of all people who live there, regardless of their ethnicity or religion. Following up on the success of MDI's earlier 'Finding common ground in Israel - Jewish and Arab journalism students working together' project, this new project targets both media students - the journalists and editors of tomorrow - and practising, mid-career journalists.

Asia

'Training the media, empowering people: towards more objective media coverage of conflict and human rights in Indonesia'
Indonesia
A 24-month project that works with the media to improve coverage of human rights issues, with particular emphasis on the rights of the country's many marginalised groups. Indonesia's media will be introduced to and sensitised to key concepts of diversity reporting - and the main journalistic tools and methods of dealing with them. Ethnic and other marginalised groups and their NGOs will be trained to communicate more forcefully and more effectively with the media - so enabling them to create greater impact.
