INDEPENDENT JOURNALISM CENTER (CHISINAU)

The mission of the Independent Journalism Center (IJC) is to facilitate the development of news media in Moldova through the support and promotion of professionalism among journalists as well as through the development of independent media organizations in the country. IJC helps them to improve the quality of their work and achieve sustainability.

Founded in 1994, IJC began as a project of the Open World House-Moldova. Now an independent NGO, the Center has received generous support from Soros Foundation-Moldova, the Public Affairs Section (PAS) of the U.S. Embassy in Chisinau, Regional Media Program of OSI-Budapest, Know How Fund (Great Britain), Press Now (the Netherlands), the International Center for Journalists (ICFJ), the Council of Europe, Dynamic Network Technologies (DNT), the Internet Access and Training Program (IATP/IREX), as well as other donors.

In February 2000, IJC became a member of the South East European Network for Professionalization of the Media (SEENPM), in June 2001 it joined the International Freedom of Expression Exchange (IFEX), and in March 2002 it became a member of the South East Europe Media Organization (SEEMO).

The IJC aims to provide professional newsmen and newswomen, journalism trainers, and students of journalism with media instruction and resource materials.

Currently, the Center carries out activities in the following key areas:

Journalism training, which includes short-term seminars and workshops on
   different topics for print and broadcast journalists: journalism basics for
   beginners, specialty reporting, media legislation, media management,
   professional ethics, etc.;
Publications, which include fortnightly informational bulletins "Media Courier"
   in Romanian and "Moldova Media    News" in English, and the bi-annual journal
   "Media in Moldova," in Romanian and English. IJC is the primary content provider
   for "Moldova Azi" Web site, which features news and analyses on key
   developments in the country.
   Also, the Center publishes a host of journalism    manuals and guides;
Legal support, which is offered by the specialized Media Law Unit staffed with
   a full-time lawyer. Through this service, journalists receive instruction on
   relevant legal matters, out-of-court support, and use specialized print and

online information resources;
Association building, i.e. consultations and other forms of assistance to
   various journalism groups and media organizations on the national and
   local level.
