special report: Religious Minorities in Armenia
(PDF / 954KB)
Religious
freedom has been a key issue in Armenia since the breakup of the Soviet Union.
Nothing has been more controversial than the freedom of Armenians to stray from
the Armenian Apostolic Church - and the freedom of foreign missionaries to tempt
them to do so. In May 2004, MDI brought together an eight-person team of Armenian
print journalists to produce an in-depth investigation of the situation of religious
minorities in Armenia. Included is material on evangelism, Jehovah's Witnesses,
Mormons, and others - and how the Armenian Apostolic Church and Armenians in general
are reacting to them. The special report was published in six Armenian newspapers.

life for themselves. Every Friday, Imam Merzuk Efendi Hadzirasidovic, sends the
same message to Muslims gathered in the mosque. Despite this, however, attacks

Villagers Fighting for a School About
400 Bulgarian Muslim inhabitants of the village of Egrek entered the no man's
land between Bulgaria and Greece at the end of November. They did this in protest
over the closing of a local school. They claim this deprived them of the right
to education, and say the move was forced by the municipal authorities, dominated
by the Movement for Rights and Freedoms, which represents ethnic Turks......
