Media debates multi-culturalism
Is multi-culturalism eroding social unity in countries such as Britain? Does Britain need more 'Britishness'? What defines the common ground in the country, and where is the balance between that common ground, Britishness, multi-culturalism and separatism? The London bombing prompted the debate in the UK . Elsewhere similar discussions induced either by global happenings or domestic experiences are taking place too.

Comics industry draws on diversity
X-ray vision. Teleportation. Shape-shifting. Flight. The special abilities of superheroes are certainly diverse, but historically the faces behind the masks have been much less so. Out of costume the biggest difference was black hair or blond. Green skin was more common than any shade of brown. And on the rare occasion when nonwhite heroes were included, names like Black Panther and Black Lightning telegraphed the difference. (The New York Times)

Bonuses tied to diversity targets
Mark Thompson is getting tough over diversity. He is demanding that targets must be met for increasing the numbers of staff from ethnic minorities and with disabilities – and any director who fails to deliver will not get an annual bonus.

Identity crisis
As more people define themselves by their spiritual beliefs, there are controversial plans to introduce legislation to curb incitement to religious hatred. Philip Pullman asks if the law will distinguish between a rational analysis of theology and a call for violence, while Monica Ali, Philip Hensher and Salman Rushdie consider the threat to free speech. Extracts from essays in Free Expression is No Offence, published by English Pen and Penguin on December 1. (The Guardian, 19 November, 2005)

Kit measures how inclusive and representative your coverage is
The Maynard Institute's 'Reality Checks' kit provides tools for measuring and discussing how accurately the news reflects the realities of America's multicultural society. The kit provides tools for an analysis of both your community's characteristics and your local newspaper content through the prism of the fault lines of race, gender, class, generation and geography. Mirroring
Images: Ethnic Minorities in the South East European Press An MDI
commissioned research report on press coverage of ethnic minorities in South East
Europe. The report is based on content analysis of newspapers in 10 countries
and territories: Albania, Bosnia, Bulgaria, Croatia, Hungary, Kosovo, Macedonia,
Montenegro, Romania and Serbia. It concludes that coverage of ethnic minorities
is related to the quality of inter-ethnic relations in each country; that the
press reflects widespread and deeply-rooted stereotypes and prejudices; and that
journalistic practices that contribute to intolerance are rife throughout the
region. PDF

in the media is a top issue all over the world, particularly generated by terrorists
attacks on the United States, and it is used in the media to prevent a conflict

& People: A Manual of Human Rights Reporting in India The
manual has a human rights focus, but contains much useful diversity material.
Included is a section on discrimination that examines the rights of women, the
aged, children, people with disabilities and refugees, as well as those of members
of castes or tribes. While aimed at working journalists in India (as well as Indian
journalism students), the manual could also be useful to journalists in other
countries, particularly in South Asia. |
