MDI's 'Finding common ground in Israel' project wins award
The Arab-Jewish student journalist team behind the 'Fresh Views' coexistence newspaper, produced as part of the Media Diversity Institute's 'Finding common ground in Israel - Jewish and Arab journalism students working together' project, has won one of 2004's British Diversity Awards. The team, from the Emek Yezreel College near Nazareth, was awarded a 'Certificate of Excellence' Silver Standard award commending its work in promoting inclusion and bridging the culture gap in its northern Israel community.
The joint project of the Media Diversity Institute and the Media and Communications Department of the Emek Yezreel College, focussed on finding common ground in Israel. Arab-Israeli and Jewish-Israeli journalism students tackled issues surrounding reporting on ethnic otherness. The project culminated in the production of a bi-lingual (Arab and Hebrew) newspaper published in June: 100,000 copies were circulated throughout northern Israel as supplement in five leading Arabic- and Hebrew-language newspapers
.
A delegation of four of the 24 students who worked on the newspaper traveled to London to accept the award. The project was supported by the European Cultural Foundation, The Sigrid Rausing Trust and the Westminster Foundation for Democracy.
