MDI has won a National Alliance of Women’s Organisations (NAWO) award in the Women in Media category.
The Awards recognise and celebrate organisations and individuals making outstanding contributions towards addressing the 12 Critical Areas of the Beijing Platform for Action and advancing gender equality and the empowerment of women.
Professor Verica Rupar, MDI trustee, who represented MDI at the award ceremony said: “Winning in the Women and the Media category, one of the most important areas of the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action, acknowledges years of challenging gender discrimination, the under-representation of women, their status and safety. The NAWO award is a call to carry on the important work MDI has done so far.”
In nominating MDI for the award, Lesley Abdela MBE said: “MDI’s ongoing commitment deserves every possible support and encouragement. Addressing the under-representation of women in media and challenging harmful stereotypes in a fair and ethical manner will only occur when it becomes a concern for all media practitioners… Civil society actors such as MDI contribute immensely to this process through monitoring, advocacy and persistent dialogue with media.”
MDI Executive Director Milica Pešić said: “This is an acknowledgment of the work of all our teams, wherever we are based – London, Brussels, Belgrade, Yerevan or Amman – and wherever we have worked, Europe, the Arab world, Africa or Asia. For almost 30 years we have been doing our best to get women a place in the media we deserve.”
