Coming Clean: Book launch explores the left’s crisis and the way forward

The Media Diversity Institute (MDI), in collaboration with the Centre for Law, Democracy, and Society at Queen Mary University of London, is proud to host the official book launch of Coming Clean: The Rise of Critical Theory and the Future of the Left, the latest work by Professor Eric Heinze.

Taking place on 23 May 2025 at the Frontline Club in London, this event promises an evening of critical reflection and robust discussion. As debates around identity, social justice, and political strategy continue to divide progressives, Heinze’s book offers a timely and urgent exploration of the challenges facing the left today.

What has gone wrong with the left—and what must change?

In Coming Clean, Heinze examines how embracing critical theory, while once a powerful tool for challenging injustice, may have drifted from its democratic roots. He argues that in its current form, the left risks undermining the values it seeks to uphold, losing sight of broader coalitions, public discourse, and the pursuit of political ethics.

The book launch will feature a conversation between Professor Eric Heinze and Dr. Edmundo Bracho-Polanco, Senior Lecturer and Programme Coordinator at the University of Westminster’s School of Media and Communication. The discussion will be moderated by Paul Henley, BBC radio presenter known for his work on global affairs.
