Condemned to loneliness? A Diversity Index to prevent media isolation of marginalised communities in South America

Media Diversity Institute will hold a Masterclass at the Gabo Festival in Bogota, Colombia, fostering a discussion on media inclusion in Latin America and introducing audiences to the Media Diversity Index, which now covers South America.

Date: 25 July 2026

Time: 6:00 pm – 7:00 pm

Location: Audiovisual Room – Chapinero Happiness Centre – Calle 82 #10 – 69

The session, hosted by MDI Executive Director Milica Pesic, will examine why so many journalistic stories focus on the voices of the elite and exclude those most affected by political, social, and cultural polarisation.

Drawing on the findings and recommendations of the new 2026 Media Diversity Index for South America, the Masterclass will explore how news outlets can become more inclusive.

The Index, which measures diversity in both content and governance across five South American countries, reveals that press freedom is no guarantee of media diversity or inclusion. While Argentina aspires to be a global hub for AI innovation, it ranks last in the Index, while Uruguay and Colombia occupy the top spots.

Milica will invite attendees and experts in the audience to participate in the discussion and decision-making on how the Index can contribute to activism, journalism training, research, and policies surrounding media inclusion.

If you are attending the Gabo Festival, you can find more information or register for the Masterclass.
