Algorithms are increasingly prominent in shaping news content, helping journalists identify trends, outliers, and correlations across vast datasets. However, the societal implications of algorithmic curation remain a critical issue. While these tools can potentially enhance journalism’s public service function—fostering informed discussion and building community—there are concerns about how algorithmic biases may exclude certain groups from the news narrative, particularly marginalised communities.
This panel brought together scholars and practitioners to examine the role of journalism in addressing these challenges and ensuring that the use of algorithms contributes to a more inclusive media landscape. The session introduced MDI’s latest publication, “Media and Diversity in the Age of Algorithmic Curation,” which examines these issues in depth.
