MAGIC: Mapping Muslim Women Voices and Gendered Islamophobia and Stereotypes in Media

The MAGIC (Muslim women and communities Against Gender Islamophobia in soCiety) project aims to prevent gendered islamophobia in the media in Belgium and Spain through different activities, including media monitoring. The Belgium Dispatch presents the results of the first part of the analysis of the Belgian media, operated by the Media Diversity Institute, and covers the period from May to September 2021. The three Belgian media monitored as part of this project are Le Soir, La Dernière Heure, and Het Laatste Nieuws. Three Spanish media, El País, La Razón, and ABC, are monitored by Fundación Al Fanar.

MAGIC Cross Country Report

MAGIC has been monitoring and mapping for 15 months the journalistic narratives of three Belgian newspapers (Le Soir, el Dernière Heure, Het Laatste Nieuws) and three Spanish newspapers (El País, ABC, La Razón).

The newspapers have been analysed in terms of the presence and number of articles written about and by Muslim women, the visuals, and the type of wording used. The results of quantitative and qualitative analysis have been also discussed at national cross-perception consultations, gathering representatives of the project´s target groups.

In this publication, MAGIC offers a comparison between the results found in each country and underlines that if some patterns are to be found in Spain and Belgium these would surely be found in other European countries.
