Since the late 1980s nationalism, nationality, identity, migration, ethnicity and race have re-emerged as major issues in Europe. Items about them appear almost daily in the media. The journalists assigned to such stories often find them difficult to cover.
There is confusion over how to describe and address individuals and groups, while the pressures to stereotype and conform to prejudice can be strong. Some of this uncertainty probably arises from the journalists’ own perspectives: the media may be either themselves part of, or at least closely associated with, specific groups. Yet the multicultural nature of Europe as a whole is undeniable. The question to be asked of journalists is how sensitive to cultural diversity is their reporting?
