The latest stunt by Dutch right-wing populist Gert Wilders has sparked a new row over hate-speech in Europe and exposed a weakness bordering upon cowardice in government of the Netherlands. The anti-migrant Freedom Party (PVV) led by Wilders has launched a web-site inviting people to “shop a migrant” by lodging complaints over people from East Europe in the country.

The British press has found itself in the midst of an academic fracas over the impact of migration on jobs with some news outlets claiming a study carried out by the Migration Advisory Committee (MAC) has uncovered an empirical link between migration and employment. The report suggests that 23 British jobs are lost for every 100 immigrants from outside the European economic area, a finding that conflicts directly with another study published by the National Institute of Economic and Social Research (NIESR) on the same day.

Just two months after the Media Diversity Insitute and other press freedom groups called for more solidarity within Hungarian journalism to counter state threats to the press a new group of independent editors is launched in Budapest today. The Hungarian Editors’ Forum, an association for ethical journalism and self-regulation, is a group which says it has a bold prescription for the country’s media crisis – more independent reporting and higher standards.
