Women’s representation in the media has come to the forefront in recent years with movements such as #MeToo and #TimesUp. These movements have shed light on the rampant sexual harassment and misconduct that women face in the entertainment industry. The media has also been criticized for its lack of diversity and inclusion, with women of colour and those in the LGBTQ+ community being particularly underrepresented. Media Diversity Institute is determined to monitor and bring to light such media failings.
As we celebrate this year’s Woman’s History Month, Media Diversity Institute would like to dedicate our newsletter to the brave Iranian women journalists who risk their safety in order to expose Iran’s treatment of women. As Mahtab Mahboub wrote in an article for Media Diversity Institute:
“[Independent female journalists] have proven that their voices, their passion for life and their fight for “woman, life, freedom” is unstoppable, despite all the pressures.”
