The death of Masha Amini in police custody on 16 September 2022 after being arrested for allegedly wearing her headscarf “improperly” sparked widespread women-led protests across Iran calling for political, social and economic change. While Iranian society is not unfamiliar to protests, these demonstrations with their focus on “Women, Life, Freedom” received global media attention. With the Iranian government attempting to control reporting from the country, media outlets relied largely on social media to cover events, navigating authentic reports but also in many cases mis/disinformation. They did not always get it right.
Media Diversity Institute brings together media and political experts to discuss how the media is reporting Iran’s uprising. The webinar will explore where the media got things wrong, what journalists, especially Western reporters, need to take into consideration when reporting on the country, and how they cover diversity within a Muslim context.
