Published by UNESCO in 2012, the Gender-Sensitive Indicators for Media study (GSIM) contributes to gender equality and women’s empowerment in and through media of all forms. The main focus of this publication is on the equality and gender dimensions of social diversity in the media. It encourages news and media organisations to think critically about how their workplace practices and the content they produce contributes to gender stereotypes in society.

GSIM seeks to address the intersection of women’s empowerment and media development. It argues that if media are to accomplish their democratic potential then they should reflect diversity in society. The study encourages media organisations to make gender equality issues transparent and comprehensible to the public, as well as to analyse their own internal policies and practices.
