Promoting a diverse, inclusive and accurate media

With sister organisations in London, Brussels, Belgrade, Yerevan and Gloucester (US), the Media Diversity Institute (MDI) works internationally to promote accurate and nuanced reporting on issues of race, religion, ethnicity, class, disability, gender and sexual identity in media landscapes around the world.

While our work is grounded in the principles of freedom of expression and the values of diversity and inclusion, our day-to-day focus is on cultivating practical skills to combat negative stereotypes and disinformation, and to improve media and information literacy.

The paradox of diversity at Paris 2024 Olympic Games

The Paris 2024 Olympic Games celebrated diversity, but also revealed sharp contradictions. A tableau depicting LGBTQ+ icon Barbara Butch during the opening ceremony was met with backlash, and French-Malian singer Aya Nakamura, criticised for her cultural role, delivered a powerful performance despite the odds.

This contrast is stark when compared to the realities faced by marginalized groups in Paris, including bans on Muslim headscarves and mass evictions.

Our latest article explores these contradictions further through the lens of the transphobic and misogynistic attacks on Algerian boxer Imane Khelif. After a controversial match against Italian boxer Angela Carini, Khelif was subjected to a wave of hostile media coverage in Italy, highlighting ongoing issues of diversity and representation.

For more insights, read The Transphobic and Misogynistic Attacks by the Italian Press on Algerian Boxer Imane Khelif, and check out our other articles on Get the Trolls Out 2024 Olympics and the Hijab Ban & The Olympic Spectacle Stirring Christian and Religious Controversy.
